Go long in Texas 2022 »

Thu, Aug 18 2022, 1:39:47 am GMT

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Cowboy Up|Flytec|Go long in Texas 2022|Gregg "Kim" Ludwig|Icaro|James Race|Jon Irlbeck|Ken Millard|Larry Bunner|Makbule Baldik Le Fay|Mark Moore|Masayuki Takeo|Matt McCleskey|Mick Howard|Moyes|Rich Reinauer|Rick Mullins|Robin Hamilton|Tiki Mashy|USHPA|Wills Wing|XC

The original stated intent of the Go Long Texas event was to offer pilots of all experience levels the opportunity to fly simple cross country flights in what are some of the best conditions on the planet starting from the Texas Gulf coast. The event is not set up as a competition between pilots, rather a challenge for each pilot to fly their furthest, seeking personal best (PB) flights in a supported environment of camaraderie. This year’s event had 31 pilots flying over the week from July 17-24th from Cowboy Up Hang Gliding base in Wharton, Texas. The event was a spectacular success! The raw statistics:

178 launches and only 12 re-lights, mainly pilots choosing to take a short flight or for equipment issues. Pretty much everyone that wanted to get underway on an XC did. Every time, every day

  • 31 pilots, 27 Personal Best flights, 6 pilots each with 2 PB’s during the week
  • 11,822 total miles flown
  • 52 flights > 100 miles
  • Site record (241 miles) broken 3 times during the week and is now 308 miles
  • No Safety incidents, accidents
  • 31 super happy pilots and Organizers

Weather Conditions

The conditions were consistently good through the week with high pressure dominating Central Texas and provide a generally SW-SSE flow through the flying area. There is also a historic drought across the State that has for sure helped with soaring conditions. Wind speeds were mostly moderate during the week at typically 8-14mph along the course line. Early morning cloud streets were present pretty much every day we flew and with consistent lift and fairly high TOL at 4000’agl+ by 1200 hrs. Base rose during the day and further north on the course line reaching over 8,000’msl most days and up to 9,500’ on the best days. Lift was big, fat and consistently strong on most days – 600-800fpm was “normal”. With the dry ground and strong daily heating (temps > 100°F for most of the day), it was possible to fly in thermal till sunset. Probably after sunset too.

The “Stories”

With so much flying and downwind distance flown, most of the pilot interaction happened in the morning pilot meetings. There were endless great stories from the previous day’s flying. Pilots like Maria Alexandra and Takeo making their first cross country flights on Falcons. Ken Millard “I’ve been trying to fly a hundred miles for the last 10 years and yesterday I went 162 miles”. Ken then went 220 miles a day later. He even went again on the Sunday after the event had closed with no arranged retrieve driver to crack off another 200 miles. And he got back to Wharton the same day! James Race similarly hadn’t done a hundred miler and still hasn’t. But he did go over 200 miles, but yet that hundred miler still eludes him. Even the elder gentlemen got into this – both Larry Bunner and Robin Hamilton getting new hang gliding PBs at 289 and 308 miles respectively.

Rich Reinauer had 5 flights totaling 878 miles and almost 33 hours airtime. He broke his PB twice (244, 256 miles) and had the site record twice. One of the key organizers of the event, Matt McCleskey, got his first 100 miler and then had a second long flight where he flew back north to his hanger in Navasota to park his T3 with his Kit Fox. Jon Irlbeck, a Sports class hero from GL2021 for his threepeat on PBs at that event (and namesake of the Jon Irlbeck Award for multiple PBs at the GL event), could alas manage only a couple of >100mile PBs this year. Jon did have a late evening breakdown where the local State Trooper offered assistance, brought water and carefully checked in on Jon till he was picked up. Yes, this is Texas.

For the aforementioned Jon Irlbeck award, it was close between the 6 pilots each with 2 PBs but after the duration PB tie-breaker, James Race was the recipient of the handsome carbon full face helmet sponsored by Icaro. Our other award of the smart grey Flytec jacket went to Mick Howard for outstanding sportsmanship.

Thanks to:

A big thanks to key organizer Tiki Mashy, Cowboy Up and the volunteers Sahaar Moghtader, Makbule Baldik, Matt McCleskey, Read Bixby, Masayo Eda, Takeo Eda, Mark Moore and Henry Wise that set up and kept the event running flawlessly.

Our Tug Pilots were Rick Mullins, Gregg Ludwig and Tiki, providing perfect, fast tows into the Texas morning skies. A big thanks to Tiki and these gentlemen.

We are also grateful for all of our drivers. They probably didn’t realize what they were getting themselves into when they signed up for this event with long retrieves pretty much every day. The latest return to base was around 4:30 am from close to the Oklahoma state line… There were no real vehicle dramas and the one time we had a vehicle issue, other pilots immediately set out to help retrieve the pilots involved and get the vehicle fixed.

We had wonderful sponsor support for this growing event – everything from T-shirts to helmets and even great deals on new gliders. Sponsors were Flytec, Icaro, Moyes, USHPA and Wills Wing. Many, many thanks.

See ya next year.

Kobala Open 2020

Poor weather first two days

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Facebook

https://www.hg-slo.si/index.php/en/news

The first day of the competition was interrupted due to dangerous storm clouds over Kobarid, rain on the competition route and wind direction turning.

Alexandra Serebrennikova writes:

Task 1 of Kobala Open 2020 was cancelled in the air. Interesting sky in the beginning, a chance of overdevelopment according to the forecast and some waiting on the launch before one could soar up. Yeah, got to realize I was missing this classical atmosphere of a shaky day on a hill during a hang gliding comp.

Nevertheless, finally all went good until the first TP in Kobarid. The cylinder was pretty much a border to a wall of rain, so the task had to be cancelled just half an hour after it's begun. The rain will stay with us until tomorrow afternoon, so looking forward to the second half of the week when they make promises for a high pressure coming for a visit!

Hang Gliding Competitions around the World

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|calendar

Alexandra Serebrennikova‎ writes:

Maybe this calendar will be helpful for those who wants to see all the competition dates in one place. I made a calendar collecting all events 2020 I came across so far (about 50+). It gives a better overview when planning the next season:

http://sashaz.com/hgcalendar

The main pros of this calendar that anyone can submit an event (please do so). This is especially useful for small local competitions which are hard to get to know about.

Filter by categories such as continents, locations, organizers, etc.

Agenda/monthly/tiles view.

Each event can be also imported into your personal Google calendar just by a click of the mouse.

There are more functions - play around with it.

Also please spread the word/share this post, so potentially more hang gliding people can contribute to the schedule.

The FAI Sabiha Gökçen Medal

Four World Records

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Facebook|record

Alexandra Serebrennikova writes:

Yesterday I was honored to receive the FAI Sabiha Gökçen Medal 🏅 2019, which is defined as for the woman who performs the most outstanding achievement in any air sport in the previous year (referring to my four female world records which all got ratified). The special 'thank you' to the Russian NAC and Sergey Ananov for taking the cumbersome administrative job in his professional hands and being the Russian delegation head at the awarding ceremony!

Well I guess, when looking back in 2010, I didn't imagine falling in love with hang gliding so much that it would bring me to the stage of flying world records and receiving the award of such a high rank. Now here we are, by many means, thanks to the people who are supporting my passion and curiosity. They build the gliders which are heaps of joy to fly even for someone under 50 kg, Moyes Delta Gliders. Moreover if not Gerolf, it would be unlikely for me to become a pilot I am now and to discover Australia - its beauty, the laid-back lifestyle and this amazing flying one experiences there.

There's definitely more to explore and I hope to get to this project as soon as all the other projects work together.

By now thanks again to all the people who are sharing this flying story with me, let's see more of it!

The Spring Meeting - Friuli Venezia Giulia Trophy, at its 4th edition, is a FAI 2 competition (Hang Gliding class 1, class 5, Sport class) which takes place in a flight zone well known by European pilots. It is also part of the big flying area which have hosted the XXII Hang Gliding World Championship.

The flight area is mainly in the foothill but, depending on weather conditions, it is possible to fly also in the Alps and in the flatland. There are different takeoffs; two of them are in Slovenia and can be chosen in case of changeable weather.

Spring Meeting - Friuli Venezia Giulia Trophy 2019

The weather turns

competition|Friuli Venezia Giulia Trophy 2019|weather

https://airtribune.com/springmeeting-2019/blog__day_5

Pilots are already on takeoff. Weather seems perfect today, so we expect to go in the air early in the afternoon for a consistent task.

Because pilots weren't assigned Flymaster trackers through Airtribune, live tracking on Airtribune doesn't work for this competition. Follow the pilots on the Flymaster web site.

The task has started: https://lt.flymaster.net/bs.php?grp=2636

You can see the Replay from yesterday here: https://airtribune.com/play/4032/2d at the two times faster speed (compared to the Flymaster web site). The Airtribune replay uses the IGC files found here: https://airtribune.com/springmeeting-2019/results. Mr. Postman Look and See...

If there's a homologation in your bag for me

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|CIVL|Corinna Schwiegershausen|PG|record

Alexandra Serebrennikova (Sasha) <<multikss>> writes:

I haven’t expressed myself in a while, but I think it might need to become an open discussion, as I alone cannot get through to FAI/CIVL so far.

The matter concerns my four women world record claims that I made after flying an FAI triangle 210 km and a distance to goal of 408.1 km at Forbes in Dec’17 – Jan’18 last year. Altogether there were five claims made, but one, namely open distance, got cancelled earlier, since it was only 900 m longer than Corinna’s current Record (407.2), which is by a 100 meter not long enough to be a new record. So the other four were as follows:

Straight distance to a declared goal: 407,99 km 02 Jan 2018, Alexandra Serebrennikova (RUS), dossier under review

Free distance using up to 3 turn points: 417,2 km 02 Jan 2018, Alexandra Serebrennikova (RUS), dossier under review

Distance over a triangular course: 210,4 km 27 Dec 2017, Alexandra Serebrennikova (RUS), dossier under review

Speed over a triangular course of 200 km: 37,83 km/h 27 Dec 201,7 Alexandra Serebrennikova (RUS), dossier under review

Here is just a little introduction on how the records have to be processed after they are flown. The rules of Section 7 are pretty straight forward. According to them, my national aero club  and I were to prepare and send a dossier with the confirmation documents, tracklogs, declared tasks, etc. These dossiers are then to be sent to FAI within strictly defined time of 120 days after the preliminary claim is received. At first I was a bit worried about this paper work with Russian National Aerosports Federation, but to my relief I have to admit they were really helpful and quick in preparing everything, so all the dossiers were sent well before the deadline. Here I’d like to underline that they were sent a year ago.

When you make a claim you have to pay a 200CHF (~200 Euro) fee for each one (so 800 Swiss Francs for my four records) to cover the administration costs of the FAI to process them. Here again I've got to thank my federation for finding the way to do it for me, everything was paid on time.

Now coming to my point. After patiently waiting for about nine months and not receiving any news, notes, enquiries, whatsoever, I started wondering about the claims. I wrote a couple letters to the official email, <records>, asking if there is any news and when I can hope to get the claims finalized. Today is about a year since sending in the dossiers, and despite these letters, there is still no answer. All that I once got was "We are doing what we can according to the work load".

At the same time I was following some other claims, for instance, in paragliding. They were sent in later than mine and have already been ratified. I’m happy for those guys though, having things working motivates one to attempt the new records, doesn’t it?

As for me, I don’t think my motivation to fly for records and overall good interesting flights will fade, but this sort of situation isn’t helping  the rapidly fading women's hang gliding. I hope the Florida women's worlds will take place, but apart from it there are virtually no competitions for women only. Records are one of the last ways to push it on the official level and to keep it viral. Honesty I had an impression CIVL and FAI were sort of caring about this.

So guys, if you’re thinking of flying records, go for it, it’s fun and your grandma and all your friends will be very impressed with your skills, one of which should be patience. Train it, ‘cause you’ll need it during the flight as well as to a much bigger scale afterwards.

2018 Forbes Flatlands revisited

Wed, Jan 10 2018, 9:27:41 am EST

A description after the fact

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Bill Moyes|Forbes Flatlands 2018|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Niki Longshore|photo|record|Steve Blenkinsop|Tyler Borradaile|weather|Yoko Isomoto|Yoko Sano

Oliver Chitty «Oliver Chitty» writes:

The Forbes Flatlands competition which started on the 29th of January and lasted through to the 5th of December made it the first big comp of the year. Having hosted the world championships in 2013 it made its mark in the hang gliding scene as one of the best venues with the most consistent flying conditions to be found during this time. It attracted pilots from all around the world.

This year saw a gathering of pilots for a few practice competition days as the forecasted good weather put on a good show, notably Alexandra “Sasha” Serebrennikova managed to set new women’s declared and open distance female triangle world records during the practice days. She took off from Forbes, flew southwest to West Wyalong, then east to Grenfell before pushing back north west to Forbes to complete her task landing at 7pm. Congratulations Sasha. She commented, “And to think this is only the practice task at Forbes.”

This year the competition head quarters was run at the rugby club in the center of town where all the pilots meet for a 10 am task briefing. It was likely to be hot in excess of 35° Celsius so keeping pilots out of the sun was a priority. The pilots are told the task, start time and any other details they needed for the day. It's usually about two hours before the first launch window opens at 12:30 so it’s nice and relaxed as it only takes about 10 minutes to get to the takeoff field formally known as the Bill Moyes International Airfield.

Day one canned

Day one in any competition is always quite tense. The famous saying rings through everyone’s minds “you can’t win a competition on the first day but you sure as well can lose it.” The task set for day one is a 155km task to the SSE. There is a lot of overcast today and a strong breeze. There are some cumulus forming under the high cloud but a band of rain possibly pushing in from the west. With much discussion between the safety committee and task committee the launch window is pushed back from 12:30 till 2:30 to give the strong winds time to die down. As 2:30 arrives nearly half the field is in the air and climbing well, but maybe too well as a large area of rain starts to descend on course line. The safety committee decide to cancel the day on grounds of safety. The Laminate gliders we fly in competitions really don’t handle well in the rain but everyone makes it down safe back in the start cylinder.

Day two Task 1

The weather for day two looks far more promising, still quite strong winds out of the WSW, but no over development and a 9000' cloud base. With day one out of the way it’s a little more relaxed before take off in the tow field. Our task today takes us north to Trangie, just to the west of Dubbo for 142.8km optimized race to goal with a later start again to let some of yesterday's bad weather clear the area. A challenging cross wind for the first part of the flight which should back later on to a more predominant tail wind. All of the competitors get up and off and there is plenty of room in the 10km start radius. A large proportion of pilots take the first start at 15:00, but quite quickly people are taking different routes on course line. Some pilots take a more direct route keep just left of course line enough to battle the wind, while others push much harder into the cross wind to make the latter parts of the flight easier. First into goal is Atilla Bertok followed closely by Ollie Chitty from the first clock after taking the more direct route and not straying far from course line. It's 10 minutes before the next competitors arrive, Guy Hubbard and a chasing pack of 2nd starters (15:15) with Josh Woods, Steve Blenkinsop and Niki Longshore. Niki also took a decisive day win over the other females in the competition being the only one in goal.

Day 3 Task 2

A switch in the wind brings us a steady northerly flow. This means we will be seeing predominantly blue conditions early on and only 10knts of wind from the north in the boundary layer. With this forecast we have a 185.7km race to goal via 2 turn points finishing at Bookham north west of Canberra. It's noticeably slower in the start cylinder today and climbs are only getting to 7000ft. The first start clock comes around but only a few pilots at the top of the gaggle take the plunge, everyone else seems to be on the same consensus that a later start gate would prove more efficient if the conditions get better. It's only a short time (15 minutes) before the second start is activated. After the second start window opens everyone starts hunting down the lonely few gliders who took the first start. With two large radius turn points along the way there is quite a split of pilots along the course line. Josh Woods takes the day win closely followed by Jonny Durand and Atilla Bertok all taking the 2nd start.

Day 4 Task 3

The ever-reliable southwest wind returns for day 4 task 3 and a 195.2km task to Gulgong airstrip is set. In this wind direction we get a cooler air mass and even better flying conditions. There are talks of getting to over 10,000' today so we are reminded at pilot briefing about the effects and dangers of hypoxia.

Straight off the tow it was obvious today was much stronger than the previous day. Already by 12:30 we were getting close to 10,000' with climbs well in excess of 1000fpm. Almost everyone took the first start today and a good strong gaggle made the first 50km look easy. Niki Longshore was once again one of the top pilots pushing the gaggle and was on glide heading for climbing gliders ahead when she was hit by a incredibly strong patch of rough air sending her glider pointing straight up to the sky with no airspeed left to recover. She very quickly pulled her parachute and was on a descent through a gaggle of gliders from 8000'.

Niki did an incredible job to stop the rotation before landing quite perfectly in a paddock with road access and under the shade of trees. Jonny Durand was first on scene after seeing Niki pull her chute. He descended with her side by side and landed in the field within seconds of her arrival. Many pilots stayed in the area to make sure things were okay before heading back on course. Unfortunately, Niki’s competition would be over after such a strong and dominating start and Jonny would receive his score made from an average of his future total.

First into the Gulgong goal would once again be Atilla Bertok, closely followed by Tyler Borradaile and Josh Woods.

Day 5 Task 4

Waking up on the morning of the 2nd of January we are greeted by our competition Whattsapp group with a message of “Briefing 10am, be here ready to fly.”

There had been talks of going big today, the south wind was still blowing but slightly stronger today and even higher bases than yesterday so it looks like the task committee was planning a big one. In 2014 the distance to goal record in a competition task was set at 368km flying from Forbes to Wallygett. Today we have a slight west component to the wind and will be flying 389km to another flying site, Manila.

To make this new record task pilots had to be taking off much earlier than previous days so the first start was 12:00 just 1:30 hours after briefing in town. For many pilots this would be a personal best flight and nearly everyone took the 1st start getting on their way as soon as possible. Even at mid day there were good cumulus clouds and pilots reporting climbs to over 11,000'. A lot of pilots had Niki’s accident on their minds for a while. Glides were noticeably slower for the first portion of the course.

There seemed to be two main routes taken. A few pilots took the direct course line route when other pilots headed further west of course line and followed a line of mountains hoping to use them as triggers. 5 hours later the first pilot called on final glide. Ollie Chitty from Great Britain was first in goal with a time of 05:18:23 just ahead of Jonny Durand with a time of 05:19:27. Tyler Borradaile took 3rd place just a few seconds later. Eventually we would see 16 pilots make the record task with many personal bests broken and smiles all round, except for the retrieve drives who had over a 1000km total journey, the real hero’s of the day.

Sasha took an early bird launch and quickly flew 10km south into the head wind to a declared starting point for her an attempt at breaking the distance to goal woman’s world record, extending her flight to over 407km.

Day 6 task 5

With many pilots not returning back until the early hours of the morning the next task briefing was delayed by a few hours giving people time to rest and recuperate before flying again. A shorter dogleg task via one turn point of 155km was called landing at Wellington airstrip with a start time of 15:00. Today was the polar opposite of the previous day with no clouds and slow climbs. Many pilots were dropped in the first hour struggling to find climbs. Once at the turn point the conditions seemed to get better, but it was a strong crosswind for the final leg. Some people landed short after drifting too far down wind giving a hard final glide. Ollie Chitty took a 2nd consecutive day win once again followed closely by Jonny Durand and Guy Hubbard. Only 9 pilots made the task.

Day 7 Task 6

Finally a day with less wind. Task 6 was called a rest day for the retrieve drivers so we would be flying a closed triangle of 166km. Pilots were starting to look noticeably fatigued after 5 back to back long tasks (and a record task). The towing was slow to get going. Fortunately there were good clouds in the start cylinder and everyone had plenty of room to pick their start. Almost everyone took the first start again at 13:50 with only a few pilots choosing to take the gamble on a later start at 14:10.

The shorter first leg of the triangle with a slight chasing tail wind went quickly but some pilots got low and had to take slow climbs from the foothills at the turn point. Heading northeast into the 2nd turn point the day started to blue out and become a little more tricky. It was here that the fast first starters had a slight time advantage over the stragglers and didn’t waste much time. The wind had picked up slightly and made the final leg of the triangle more difficult as pilots headed over high ground and minimal landing areas. Once they got out onto the flats it was back to good climbs and long final glides of over 30km. Jonny Durand took the day win with a time of 03:33:59 closely followed by a consistently well scoring Rory Duncan, Jason Kath took out 3rd place for the day just 30 seconds behind Rory.

Good music and many goal margaritas were handed out in goal as pilots and retrieve drivers celebrated at last a task with no 5-hour drive home.

Day 8 Task 7

The final task. 7 straight competition days has the field of competitors looking and sounding very tired. We have a weather system passing through the area today and the wind direction could be anything later in the day. We have a task that headed north east to a large 40km radius before turning west into a 50km radius and returning south down to goal at the Peak Hill air strip. Depending on the weather this could be a final 15km strong head wind stint. There was discussion at the pilot briefing if this was safe as we would be crossing over a firing range, but it was eventually agreed that this was the best bet for the conditions forecasted in the local area.

After launch many pilots commented how rough the air was in the 5km start cylinder, some managing better than others to get up, but everyone at least managed to get away for the start. The task saw a fair tail wind for the first 50km on course line before dropping to almost nothing before the first turn point. The faster pilots of the day made a better run after the first turn point and made short work of the 2nd leg. With two very large radiuses there can be quite a few different routes depending on where you intercept the optimum point of turn point. This stretched the field out into many small gaggles. Atilla Bertok took another day win closely followed again by Tyler Borradaile and Rory Duncan seconds later.

The scores for the top three pilots were incredibly close. No one would know the final scores until the prize giving that evening, so at goal it was a quick pack up and off to get home and ready for the presentation

The only pilot to make goal everyday of the competition was Rory Duncan and rightfully so he took the overall win and became national champion by 1 single point from a total of 5880 beating 7-time champion Jonny Durand on 5879. Josh woods took a strong third place after another consistent competition. Alexandra Serebrenikova (Sasha) took 1st place in the woman’s task just ahead of Yoko Sano from Japan.

Now finally the update about the Vuelta project. (Huh, that was somewhat intense flying and also overall quite energy demanding travelling through this heat wave with +46°C temperature at times). Here is The Spanish Vuelta map with the Tasks for the first 5 days. The whole line summed up to 905 km crossing Spain from the Valdasador in West towards Alp in the very North Eastern corner of Catalunia. On the map attached one can see the whole line of tasks for that exciting and very intense flying journey. These were 5 days over Spain which are worth the effort and the energy you spend. And I hope to join the next Vuelta to see more of this absolutely amazing landscape and the country of Tapas.

The day 3. Some long waiting for better launch conditions were rewarded by another 205 km flatlands flying with ending up in a very green corner of Spain around Soria.

On the day 4 we had an ambition to cross the wide and traditionally stable valley of the river Ebro, which didn't work out this time, so the flight was shortened to about 80km instead of initial plan of 240 km.

The main challenge of the day 5 was to get out of the valley of Benabarre, which lays right on the left side of famous Ager. That was quite a peculiar feeling to fly over the places which we normally see from the other side of the beautiful gorges and lakes. Also the higher you were the cooler the air was - good motivation to stay high on these days.

I am still gathering my head around this trip, so will continue putting the tracklogs and the new photos.

Yep, there were two miss-outs for me - on the day 4 as I wrote, and the day five finished earlier than planned with an overcast on the way to the goal. Otherwise was good, I think I covered about 640 out of the 750 possible.

Flying across Spain

A rally

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Facebook

Alexandra Serebrennikova writes:

Yesterday we started a new Adventure, Vuelta Iberica organised by a team of Spanish enthusiasts, the hang gliding rally over Spain, aiming to cross the country in a week. The starting point was at the airfield in the west called Aldea del Cano Cáceres, where we got towed up in order to accomplish the 215 km task towards Toledo with the goal at Sonseca, south from Madrid.

I was a tad short of goal landing just five minutes before the sunset at 21:35. This was probably the hardest 205 km for me so far but definitely one of the most impressive big flights as well. Spanish yellow fields, green and arid ridges, old little villages with red roofs and thermals up to the sunset,  an ultimate dream of flying.

The Day 2 of Vuleta Iberica brings us to the Northern side of Central Massiff. Strong SE wind and inverted air didn't make it easy in the beginning of the challenge, so I was nearly last leaving the field after a re-tow, but at the same time was very motivated to cross one of the highest chains of Spain making it towards famous old town Avilla and then further on to the goal Airfield Castellanos near Villa Castin. Very rewarding solo flight! The airmass on this side seems to be much friendlier, so looking forward to the next jump tomorrow. The glider is already standing ready.

Finishing the comp at Manilla in style. I won the last day and a Molly Moyes' cookie coming before Jason Kath and Harrison Rowntree. This was a rough week for me at times, coming 400 m short of goal on the first day, then losing my glider which fell off a car while driving back, then I even got some stitches in my knee. Nevertheless very grateful to Moyes guys who had a spare RX3 which I could fly for the rest of the week and which brought me this nice winning goal today and 12th place overall.

OzGAP plus leading points, reduces the value of speed points

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Facebook|Jon "Jonny" Durand jnr|Jon Durand snr|New South Wales State Titles 2017|Niki Longshore

The Australians continue to mess around with GAP scoring. Last month they pulled out all the leading and arrival position points from the Forbes Flatlands. Now at the New South Wales State Titles they have combined OzGAP (how appropriate) with leading points (to make their own unique scoring system). OzGAP (arrival time points) doubles the points available to pilots who get to goal early (most likely by leaving early). There are no arrival points available if you arrive forty five minutes after the first point to goal.

So even if you are much much faster, if you take a clock one hour after the first pilot who gets to goal (and thereby had no chance what-so-ever of pimping off them), so much for arrival points. With seven start clocks on Wednesday, the 22nd, some pilots started an hour and a half after the first pilots.

Niki Longshore writes:

https://www.facebook.com/niki.longshore/posts/716976675150877

I set up at the west launch with a bunch of others despite the decision of a few who took the east launch. Namely, those who knew best. As it turned out, we waited forever. A few launched off to the east launch and got up. Before we knew it, seven start gates had come and gone. It was clearly time to move over to the east.

I finally got off the ground at 16:05. Then I nearly decked it. Unzipping three times, I was completely over the day. But I couldn't give up! I kept thinking, don't give up. Never.

I finally hooked a screamer that had my knuckles gripping the bar. I couldn't believe it. I went from zero to hero in a few short minutes. Most climbs today were over 1,000 fpm up.

I didn't even top the lift before going on course. It was a pure flogging. Even when I went on course I got flogged. Scary. Not much fun. Landing sounded nicer. But then Kelly Myrkle's voice rang out, "You're a badass." It was enough to harden up but I still had my doubts I would make the task.

Then I thought, how cool would it be to do this 100k task after launching after 4pm, nearly landing at bomb out, and then getting up, going on course, and doing it alone? That would be sweet, and it was all the motivation I needed.

So I did it. I can't believe it, but I did it. I landed at 7pm and the Hooligan team came to break down my glider. What a lucky girl.

2017 Russian Hang Gliding Calendar

Russian, Kazakhstan and Ukrainian pilots

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Andrey Solomykin|calendar|Evgeniya "Zhenya" Laritskaya|Julia Kucherenko|photo|Quest Air

Evgeniya Laritskaya «Evgeniya Laritskaya» writes:

Each month of the 2017 calendar is represented by four photos made by Russian, Kazakhstan and Ukrainian pilots in the same month of last year. Every month during 2016 we held a photo contest where our Russian-speaking hang gliding community voted for the four best photos of the month. You can see these winners in the 2017 calendar now!

Most photos were made in Russia, but some where made all around the globe by our traveling pilots. There's even a photo taken at Quest Air by Andrey Solomykin in April, a photo of Oz dunes taken by Sasha Serebrennikova in January, and a few photos from the European Alps. There's even one from Nepal.

The calendar is 11.7 x 16.5 in. (420 x 297 mm) and printed on white glossy paper. One calendar costs only $10 (the Russian ruble is low now).

If you are curious to see how and where our pilots are flying over the year, or just want to have a beautiful calendar on your wall, feel free to contact Nikolay Sushkov by e-mail: «deltacalendar2017». He will give you instructions for payment on PayPal and will mail the calendars (the postage fee will be cheaper if you buy a few at a time). Also, Nikolay and his wife, the well known Julia Kucherenko, will be coming to Quest Air Soaring center in Florida at the end of January, and they can bring a few calendars with them. Just make sure you reserve a calendar before they leave Russia!

More on the Russian Mouth release

Rings at the end of tow lines

Alexandra "Sasha" Serebrennikova|Evgeniya "Zhenya" Laritskaya

The earlier story: http://ozreport.com/20.250#0

Alexandra Serebrennikova  writes:

The guy is doing it wrong way altogether, we tow with a metal ring attached to the tow line, which is going to the release while towing. Apart from that the release itself is connected via a linchpin to the harness, not by a barrel type which has a long bridle, which might twist over in case of emergency.

I respond:

Thanks, Alexandra.

Our tow lines do not have metal rings but rather metal carabineers. The pro-tow bridle goes through the carabineer. The bridle is connected to the mouth release at one end (and, of course, the mouth release is connected to the harness as pictured below).

Here is an example with Bruno so that you can see the problem:

This is a few years ago from Evgeniya Laritskaya using a different mouth release and thereby not having a problem with a spectra bridle:

You can see the barrel release used as a secondary release.

Bridles seen here: http://ozreport.com/goodies.php.

Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championships 2016

What started out looking like it was going to be the worst Forbes comp ever turned out to be one of the best! I think we'll be talking about this one for a long time to come! It's all about the numbers! Our 10th consecutive Forbes Flatlands competition. 62 Pilots from 13 Countries 22 Crew from all over All together in 1 place, for 10 days, doing what we love, having fun, seeing old friends, making new friends and making the most of this amazing sport.

Conditions turned on for task 4 to allow us to set the longest task ever in a hang gliding competition. 368 km from Forbes to Walgett. A massive 26 pilots made the task, that's 41% of the field!

It was a personal best flight for all at goal except for Jonny Durand, Len Paton and Guy Hubbard. And a World Record flight for the only female pilot to make goal, the current World Champion Yoko Isomoto. And the Forbes mantra rings true "How Good is Forbes!"

All this made possible by so many people. Thank you: Meet Director: Wesley Hill. Operations: Thea O'Connor. Launch Director: Michael Zupanc. Goal Marshall: Rob Van Der Klooster. Bill and Molly Moyes and the tug pilots Bobby Bailey, Steve McCarthy, Bruce Crerar, Blaino and Marco Carelli. Launch crew: Richard Nevins, Sue Nevins, Lizzy Nevins, Jack Nevins, Yes the whole Nevins family! Christina Quinn, Tony Hanlon, Annie Crerar, Bena, Linda Zupanc. The Task Committee: Gerolf Heinrichs, Jonny Durand, Bruce Wynne. Safety Committee: Gordon Rigg, Lukas Bader, Nils Vesk. Protest Committee: Steve Blenkinsop, Glenn McFarlane, Trent Brown.

We set 6 Tasks totaling over 1000 kms with the leaders averaging 160 km per day, that's close to 100 miles per day! The consistent flying at Forbes is why we come back year after year. How good is Forbes!

Congratulations to all the winners!

A tough, stable day today with a base barely higher than 1800m gave us a late launch and a hard time in the air. We could take off at 3pm, and the race started at 3.30,...

It won't be a high scoring day though because nobody made goal today. Rain tomorrow, but a good day on Thursday hopefully.

Dennis and Efren flew in Efren's Dragonfly to goal. They stated that everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves. Antoine reported the strongest thermal that he had ever been in at 7 meters/second. Smooth.

The landing field was a grass air strip in a large grass filled valley. The task committee made a task that had landing fields in it all the way from the last turnpoint to goal, 15 km.

So maybe everyone will have a better attitude toward the flying here even with the higher level of turbulence today. It seems to be centered in the area of the launch.
